About the Artist

My career in art has hardly been straight forward.

After college and some post-grad work in fine arts, there was a brief affair with business.  Somehow this morphed into a dive instructor aboard a sailing ship in the Caribbean. Then there was time spent as a journalist and as a writer for a non-profit, living in a restored 18th-century house and walking cobble-stone streets to work.  I’ve been a crabber on the Chesapeake Bay and executive director of a quasi-governmental  agency in the Midwest.  I’ve been a mailman, a freelance photographer and owner-captain of a charter boat in the nation’s capital.

These and other experiences —like bumming dharma-style through Mexico and southern California—were diversions, adventures or just paychecks.  Yet collectively they became the crucible for the artist,  the inspiration and insight for much of my painting.

My experiences are reflected in my work.  The vivid colors and elemental shapes of seascapes.  The slumped shoulders of the “Office Worker,” dulled by the  oppressive emptiness of mid-level corporate life. The delusional self-importance felt in “Brief Cases.”  Or the joyful innocence of “Marcy,” whimsical and waif-like, delighting in the beach and the sea.  The colors and joi de vivre of “Cuban Dancers.”

There’s a common thread of theme and style to my work. But the medium varies. Oil-on-canvas, done mostly with a palette knife.  Watercolors, worked with sponge brushes that give a unique palette-knife effect.  And now,  I’m working with computers to create original art but in digital form…   original work painted with pixels.

All the work on this site is original and available for purchase or exhibition.
